The rough, uneven surface made for far easier climbing than ice steps had, and Thorvald made rapid progress until he ran out of rubble and had to rejoin those steps. By then, he’d come nearly three-fourths of the distance from the first slope to the opening.
Before moving onto that smooth surface, he turned to look over the Plain. From this height, he felt again the vision of stars above and below that had first struck him from the longboat. Walking the Plain had been different, darker and less reflective, but here he stood in the middle of the sky.
